NAME: Maria March (Morris) ATTENDED: 1973 - 1974 RESIDENCE: CT I attended STATHS for one miserable (if memorable) year. I was a full scholarship recipient transferred from Manchester High School (equally miserable). I cannot remember the names of my classmates even though most of them have taken up permanent residence in my visual memory. I was deemed one of the ugliest, if not the ugliest, girl in my class and the only person willing to be seen with me was probably the second "ugliest" girl (whose name I have completely forgotten). BTW, I never thought her ugly. She carried herself with grace and quiet dignity and was probably the neatest person in the class. The fact that I was withdrawn, obviously poor and had no interest in my schoolwork added to my perceived unattractiveness. I had two Sonias in my class, both of whom were very attractive girls. One had a pronounced birthmark in the shape of a mango on her face which I thought emphasized her beauty rather than detracted from it. I simply loved "Zach" Henry. I loved him even though it seemed as if I was forever running afoul of him, as a result of which, many mornings I would find myself standing on the podium during devotions. He was one of the few people at that school who saw me as a person and treated me as if I was just another student. I was pleasantly surprised when back in the late 1980s (or it may have been early '90s), one of the most attractive guys from my class saw me, recognized me and approached me. We had a rather pleasant conversation. I seem to remember that during that school year he was the boyfriend of a fellow classmate named Pauline. I am happy to report that I have not suffered any long-term damage from the unkind treatment I suffered. Rather, I am a much better person because of it. I know not to judge by appearances and even more important, I have learned to empathize with others. And, do you want to hear something amazing?
